Specialist Gastroenterologist

Dr Austin Zimbwa graduated from the University of Zimbabwe in 1994 with a Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB). In 2000, he moved from Zimbabwe to the United Kingdom and commenced 9 years of specialist training in Gastroenterology and General Internal Medicine. During this period, he worked in various hospitals in London, Wiltshire, Cardiff and Wales. In 2002, he was made a Member of the Royal College of Physicians (UK), and in 2009 was awarded the Certificate of Completion of Specialist Training in General Internal Medicine and Gastroenterology.

For 3 years, Dr Zimbwa practised as a specialist gastroenterologist (with a special interest in hepatology) and general physician in the UK (Cardiff, Royal United Bath, Ysbyty Gwynedd and Edinburgh infirmary hospitals) before moving to Toowoomba with his family. After a year of peer review, in 2013 Dr Zimbwa was granted Fellowship of The Royal Australasian College of Physicians, and has been providing gastroenterology and hepatology services in both the public and private sector in Toowoomba since then. 

Dr Zimbwa remains an active member of both The British Society of Gastroenterologists and The American Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopists. His practice, GI Health, is located at St Andrew’s Private Hospital; Dr Zimbwa has admitting rights to both St Andrew’s and St Vincent’s Private Hospitals, as well as the Toowoomba Surgicentre. 

Dr Zimbwa is a qualified specialist gastroenterologist with many years of experience performing endoscopic procedures. He is recognised by the Conjoint Committee for Recognition in Training in Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (CCRTGE) to perform colonoscopy and gastroscopy procedures, as well as endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP). Dr Zimbwa is also currently recertified with the GESA Colonoscopy Recertification program, as required by the federal ACSQHC Colonoscopy Clinical Care Standards.

Outside of work, Dr Zimbwa enjoys spending time with his wife and two sons, architecture, overseas travel and admiring sports cars.
