Open Access Service

Downs Endoscopy Services (DES) provides an open access service – as an open access patient, a pre-procedural consultation with our doctors is not required. This format allows patients to experience a simplified, streamlined process when booking their procedure, as well as allowing them to choose between four doctors and two hospital locations. To book an open access procedure with DES, patients require a referral from their General Practitioner or specialist and must have no or few medical complaints.

On the day of the procedure, patients briefly meet with both their doctor and anaesthetist before sedation is administered. Following the procedure, patients must remain at the hospital to recover from the anaesthetic drugs administered for the procedure. Hospital policy dictates that patients must be under the care of a responsible adult for twenty-four hours following the procedure. The results of endoscopies are sent back to the referring doctor on the day of the procedure.
